While the increase in deaths is partially attributed to an older population as baby boomers wade deeper into the risk pool, we believe the prominent determining factor is the discouragement of prostate cancer testing over the last decade. PSA test opponents have credited advances in treatment as the key determining factor in the reduction of prostate cancer deaths. However, the number of treatments for metastatic and castrate-resistant disease has increased dramatically over the last decade but the mortality rate has slowed and plateaued while deaths have increased recently.
