Raising awareness about Prostate cancer
by Elizabeth Morehead on August 30, 2018 at 2:15 pm

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Muskingum County Commissioners signed a proclamation to raise awareness about cancer.
Thanks to the work of Linda and Ray Hoetger from ZERO Cancer, September will be Muskingum County Prostate Awareness Month. Linda Hoetger said that after her husband was diagnosed with the cancer it become their goal to bring attention to the disease.
“I don’t want other people to have to keep going through prostate cancer…I want to be part of ending prostate cancer,” said Hoetger.
Hoetger said they have been contacting every elected official they can to get them to dedicate September to Prostate cancer. She said that so far they have gotten 189 proclamations, and they hope to get one from everyone in Ohio.
“It has been my mission for the past five years to contact every elected official in Ohio for a proclamation or resolution for prostate cancer awareness month,” said Hoetger.
Hoetger said the biggest thing they want people who have been diagnosed to know is that they are not alone. She said many have been impacted by this disease and that there are people out there who understand. To join the fight against Prostate Cancer, or for more information, visit Zerocancer.org.

September is officially Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Muskingum County

September 2018 is officially Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Muskingum County due to a Proclamation made by the Muskingum County Commissioners Thursday.
In 2009, Raymond Hoetger was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Nine years later, Hoetger and his wife Linda visited the Muskingum County Commissioners to receive a proclamation.
For the past five years, the Hoetger’s have been traveling from their home on the west side of Columbus to any local government that will have them throughout the state of Ohio. Their goal is to raise awareness about the severity of prostate cancer and encourage men to talk about the specific type of cancer.
“I didn’t want to sit back and do nothing, so I decided to start raising my voice for prostate cancer awareness,” Linda Hoetger said. “Then five years ago I had this idea that I am going to start contacting mayors and council members and whoever would listen about prostate cancer to try and get awareness out there.”
As of Thursday, over the duration of 2018, the couple has claimed 189 proclamations, resolutions and citations from mayors, senators and local officials helping the Hoetgers raise awareness for an illness that drastically impacted their lives.
“The best advice the doctor gave us was, ‘become students of prostate cancer,’” Linda Hoetger said.
When her husband was diagnosed in 2009, Linda used her creativity to bring a little life to cancer by creating Peaty the Prostate Crusader. The couple was at a support group one night when a walnut was passed around to give a tangible comparison to the size of a prostate.
“People know, when they see me they see Peaty,” Linda Hoetger said. “Or they see me and they’re like, ‘OK what can we do to keep raising awareness for prostate cancer?’”

Linda Hoetger gave Commissioner Jim Porter a Peaty the Prostate Crusader upon learning that he was fighting prostate cancer.
The humanized walnut, complete with a hat, has traveled as far as England to be a mascot for friends of the Hoetger’s that are battling prostate cancer as well.
It’s not just the prostate crusader that travels hundreds of miles to raise awareness. The couple goes as far as Capitol Hill to encourage continued funding for prostate cancer research and speak with congress members about the aggressive disease.
Given Commissioner Jim Porter’s on-going, two-year fight with prostate cancer, Raymond Hoetger and Porter compared stories, laughed about doctor’s appointments and shared their appreciation for their families and God during their medical challenges.
After sharing his own story with the couple, Porter recounted an experience he had at the barber shop last week where three of the five men in the shop mentioned they were fighting cancer. Two, including Porter, are fighting prostate cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society, one in nine men will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime.
The couple has plans to continue raising awareness for the one in nine men and encourage men to be proactive about their health by getting PSA tests.
“I want to help end prostate cancer, one man at a time, one family at a time,” Linda Hoetger said. “To say, ‘Hey look, you are someone who’s important and we need to keep raising awareness and we need you around.’”

Education is Key!

Education regarding prostate cancer and early detection strategies is critical to saving lives, preserving, and protecting our families. The economical and social hardship it has on the families is huge.

This is among one of the reasons I contunually ask our elected officials in Ohio and now other states for their support in helping to spread the word in their Districts, and Communities. Many men who receive those horrible words. You have Prostate Cancer. Will mostly likely not share with others and suffer in silence. I am so thankful that Ray Hoetger has been open with his diagnosis in 2009. They now are at an increased risk of depression. We need to let them know it's okay to share and that we are going to take them under our wings and support them on their journey!

Our journey has not been easy, we have had major life changes! Prostate cancer is a couples disease, and it has made a huge impact on my life as well. When he was diagnosed I knew nothing about prostate cancer. One thing for sure I ws not going to sit back and do nothing. I felt so alone as no one seemed to talk about it. I took to the internet and was finding information on prostate cancer. I started a FB page for others to find the information in one place. Then I was meeting some courages ladies who found my page , they helped me know I was not alone. Beth Nitz Smith Vinson, Karen Allison, Tiffany Myers, and many more who are family now! God had a plan for us to meet. We laughed and cried with prostate cancer.

Now the FB page has turned into a private FB group 6 years later. It has grown to close to 3,000 members now. Some of the ladies has asked. Since I lost my guy, do I have to leave the group? Definatly not, Unless you want too. You still have so much to offer. We share the Good, the Bad an the Ugly of prrostate cancer!

Whereas, in Ohio an estimated 5,810 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and an estimated 1,110 deaths will occur in 2018; and

Whereas, Men with relatives – father, brother, son – with a history of prostate cancer are twice as likely to develop the disease; and

My Story

Dear Elected Officials

My name is Linda Hoetger and on June 19, 2009, my life forever changed when my husband Ray and I were given the devastating news that Ray had an aggressive form of prostate cancer. He is a 20 year Veteran of the United States Air Force. Thankfully he remains in Remission!  However, I was not about to sit back and do nothing! I started advocating and raising awareness for this horrible disease that no one seems to want to talk about. In 2012, I began working with ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer, a national nonprofit with the mission to end prostate cancer. ZERO advances research, improves the lives of men and families, and inspires action. There are men living in your communities who are also affected with prostate cancer and are not speaking up as this disease has a devastating effect on them and their families. It is so important to let them know they are not alone. We care and we are ready to support and educate communities across the nation about Prostate Cancer Awareness month in September! Congressman Steve Stivers, Governor John Kasich, State Senators Troy Balderson, Kevin Bacon, Larry Obhof, Frank Hoagland, John Eklund are among elected officials supporting our efforts. Including supporting Mayors from Ohio, Kingston, New York, Columbus, Georgia., Cleveland, Tennessee, New Bern, North Carolina, and Columbus, Indiana. Join us with this epic movement across the nation.

Working with ZERO has given me so many more opportunities to help raise awareness and to be part of ending prostate cancer. Each year Ray and I speak to our elected officials at the Annual ZERO Prostate Cancer Summit in Washington, D.C., and work locally in Ohio and across the nation to secure proclamations from each local government.

1 in 9  men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. Someone in your family or you may know someone impacted by prostate cancer.  Your support is needed as education and awareness for prostate cancer is limited across the nation. Prostate cancer awareness month is in September, I am asking for your support in hopes that you to can challenge and encourage your surrounding communities to join us in raising awareness and education so men can make an informed decision if treatment is needed in their lifetime. Your support means the world to those battling this horrible disease and gets men talking and veterans sharing their story as well. While men are sharing their story, other men and families know they are not alone in this fight and in turn encourage others to share too. Please share the Proclamations on your City, Village and Township Social Media pages as another way to help raise awareness in hopes to also get men to speak up and share too.
Each September, the nation recognizes prostate cancer awareness month to help defeat the third leading cause of cancer deaths among men. An estimated 29,430 husbands, sons, brothers, fathers, and grandfathers will lose their lives to prostate cancer in 2018. An Ohio resident has been hard at work to ensure that these proclamations are renewed annually. Linda & Ray Hoetger has spoken with local leaders to remind communities of the pain and suffering of prostate cancer. As a result, Mayors, Legislators, City Council Members, Town/Village manager, County Commissioners and Ohio Statehouse Representatives will issue a Proclamation, Resolution and Letters of Commendations declaring September Prostate Cancer Awareness month. Elected officials have shared this with newspapers and newsletters as another way to help promote prostate cancer awareness and education. And invite members of the Proclamation Team to Council meetings to share their stories and information about prostate cancer.
We ask that you send a copy so that our Proclamation Team across the nation can share your community support. The copies are taken to prostate cancer events and on Capitol Hill.  The Prostate Cancer Community Thanks you for you support!
